County Cup
Wednesday 22nd January 2020
Millport, represented by Richard, Dave, David, Susan, Willie, Jimmy, Eddie and Jim, took on two teams from Bute for the annual competition for the County Cup. Millport finally snatched victory to retain the cup. Many congratulations to all. Dave Cunningham was top skip for Millport and Ron Forrester for Bute. Millport President Richard was presented with the cup by Bute's Nancy.

The day started with a slightly tense wait to see if the ferries would be running as the first three of the morning were cancelled due to the winds. Luckily, the 8.30 from Cumbrae ran (the next ferries till 11.15 did not!) and Millport's Curlers were able to make their way up to Greenacres to await the Bute Curlers and the annual contest for the County Cup. Another tense wait ensued as the Rothesay ferry was diverted to Gourock instead of coming in at Wemyss Bay, but the intrepid travellers finally made it onto the ice, albeit half an hour later than scheduled. The morning session was not a very happy one for Millport, with Robin's team losing out to Ron's 5-6 after 7 ends and Elly's team similarly lost to Alex's team after 7 ends. After a break for soup, tea and sandwiches (and for some something a little more fortifying), the teams hit the ice again with Millport coming out fighting to make up the deficit. The afternoon games provided more dramatic tension, but gradually Millport pulled ahead and both Robin and Elly's teams avenged the morning's defeats. At the final count, Millport won by four ends, retaining the handsome County Cup. Top skip for Millport was Robin with 9 points to Elly's 7. For Bute, nothing could separate the two skips whether by points, ends, shots or whatever and Ron graciously declared that as Alex had been the previous year's top skip in the competition, he should retain his position. It was a very exciting contest and well done to all who took part. MCC was represented by - Millport 1: Robin, Jimmy, Ann and Willie; Millport 2: Elly, Susan, Fergus and Eddie.
